Margaret Graves
Margaret “Margo” Graves, born June 8, 1980, was a White American family-medicine nurse practitioner who lived in McLean, Virginia. She and her husband, pediatrician David Graves, raised two children, Brandon Graves and Sabrina Graves.
Career
Margo grew up in the mid-Atlantic and trained as a registered nurse before completing a family-medicine nurse practitioner program. By the late 2000s, she was working in family medicine. She maintained her own clinical career while David ran a pediatric practice, and both worked in outpatient health care. Patients remembered her kindly for competent, steady care in a busy practice.
Personality and Communication
Margo was practical and organized. She loved Brandon and Sabrina but seldom relied on declarations of affection. Packed lunches that accounted for allergies, birthday cards sent on time, correctly completed insurance forms, and a reliably managed household were characteristic ways she cared for them. Sabrina later recognized Margo’s competence at that daily work as her first model of a capable adult.
Family and Core Relationships
David Graves
Margo met David in his final year of medical school, while she was studying nursing. A family friend introduced them; she was not immediately impressed, and he asked her out three times before she agreed. They married when David was in his late twenties and later settled in McLean as he established his pediatric practice. Their marriage was steady and practical, with both maintaining outpatient medical careers and Margo taking much of the responsibility for keeping the household’s schedules and needs organized.
David made coffee for Margo most mornings. When his high-frequency hearing loss became evident, she suggested hearing aids, although he had not begun using them. She also told Sabrina about David’s atrial fibrillation after his diagnosis, a piece of family medical information Sabrina learned from her mother rather than from David.
Brandon Graves
Brandon was Margo and David’s older child. He later worked as an investment banker in New York City.
Sabrina Graves
Margo and Sabrina had a warm but less emotionally intimate adult relationship than Sabrina shared with David. They texted about appointments and family scheduling rather than feelings and did not spend their evenings in long phone conversations. Margo’s work schedule sometimes kept her from driving Sabrina to horse shows, and David went in her place.
Sabrina disclosed her autism diagnosis to Margo several months after telling David. Margo responded practically by asking what support would be useful and then continued relating to Sabrina without treating the diagnosis as a rupture or a change in who her daughter was. Sabrina found the low-drama response unexpectedly comforting.
